Maritime Southeast Asia Course Coordinator
McColm & Company (McCO) supports the Area Studies Division at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State by providing essential Area Studies training to State Department and USG personnel and contractors. McCO seeks a subject matter expert instructor to serve as the Maritime Southeast Asia Course Coordinator. The successful candidate will design, deliver, and manage the 5-day sub-regional course covering Maritime Southeast Asia.
DESCRIPTION The objective of the course is to provide area knowledge to prepare foreign affairs professionals to carry out their responsibilities working in or on Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor-Leste. The purpose of the course is to provide participants with an understanding of the forces that have shaped modern Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor-Leste, and continue to influence the course of their development domestically and internationally, especially those issues that most affect relations with the United States. It reviews historical and cultural factors that have given rise to each country’s recent structure and explores the major social, economic, and political issues facing these nations today. It also provides an overview of each country’s government and economy as well as the present policies of the United States on the key issues in U.S.-bilateral relations. The course typically combines lectures, class discussions, field trips, documentaries, and other participatory activities such as the preparation of a paper and/or an oral presentation in class, and is supported by readings. DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS The course is 5 days in length, beginning June 22, 2020 and ending June 26, 2020. The course will temporarily be delivered remotely, online, due to COVID-19.
