​Globalization has created an interconnectedness among nations and peoples that means problems in one geographic location quickly ripple to affect others. The world's resources are finite, our environment is changing, and natural resources are depleting. Too many people, youth especially, are without jobs, even as companies and organizations are facing challenges in acquiring talent with the skills they require. Meanwhile, quality of life for a vast majority of the world has improved dramatically over the last fifty years, with broader access to basic services, education, technology, and higher standards of living. With higher standards comes higher expectations and governments, businesses, and organizations must understand their responsibilities to an empowered and connected populous in order to survive and thrive in our changing world.

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. The triple bottom line approach - equal consideration of impact, outcomes, and returns on people, profit, and planet - helps governments, organizations, and businesses identify strategies that generate lasting impact, real value, and avoid doing harm. Lean start up approaches help reduce waste in the development of products, services, and policy - saving money, energy, and time. Human centered design engages people in designing solutions that will have the greatest positive impact on their own lives - leading to greater buy in, adoption rates, and increasing chances for positive change. Together, these tools create a formula for achieving sustainability and we combine these approaches to ensure our clients endure and thrive.

Governments, businesses, organizations, and individuals all have a role to play in achieving sustainability and McCO helps them develop the skills needed to pursue sustainability in their programs and operations, while helping them understand each other. Businesses are good at generating profit, but often need support in identifying and understanding their social and environmental impacts. Governments and NGOs work hard to advance social impact and protect the environment but often miscalculate the import role of profit in achieving sustainability. Research has shown that adopting sustainable business practices reduces costs and increases profits for businesses over the long term while deliver positive returns in social and environmental terms. Governments and organizations can also implement triple bottom line strategies and utilize lean start up approaches to reduce waste. The first step is to think in the long-term.
