Central Europe Course Coordinator
McColm & Company (McCO) supports the Area Studies Division at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. Department of State by providing essential Area Studies training to State Department and USG personnel and contractors. McCO seeks a subject matter expert instructor to serve as the Course Coordinator. The successful candidate will design, deliver, and manage the 5-day sub-regional course covering Central Europe.
The purpose of this course is to deliver area knowledge to foreign affairs professionals to carry out their responsibilities working in or on Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lichtenstein, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
The objective of the course is to provide area knowledge to prepare foreign affairs professionals to carry out their responsibilities working in or on Central Europe. This course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the forces that have shaped modern Central Europe and continue to influence the course of each country’s development domestically and internationally, especially those issues that most affect relations with the United States. The course involves invited subject matter experts drawn from the State Department, think-tanks, academia, international organizations and the diplomatic community. Course segments cover U.S. relations with the sub-region, history and issues of historical memory, government and politics, demographic, societal and economic institutions and performance, relations to the EU and NATO, and foreign affairs more generally, with special emphasis on relations with Russia and China. The seminar combines short lectures, class discussions, field trips, documentaries, and other participatory activities such as debates and oral presentation in class, and is supported by readings.
TERMS OF REFERENCE
The course is 5 days in length, beginning August 31, 2020 and ending September 4, 2020. The course will temporarily be delivered remotely, online, due to COVID-19. The Course Coordinator is expected to:
